The city is named after chief Maputsu I of the Tembe clan, a subgroup of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsonga_people\">Tsonga people<\/a>. Located near the southern end of the country, it is positioned within 120&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilometre\">km<\/a>&nbsp;(75 miles) of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eswatini\">Eswatini<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\">South Africa<\/a>&nbsp;borders. The city has a population of 1,088,449 (as of 2017<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-INE_01-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>) distributed over a land area of 347.69&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Square_kilometre\">km<sup>2<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;(134&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Square_mile\">sq mi<\/a>). The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_Maputo\">Maputo metropolitan area<\/a>&nbsp;includes the neighbouring city of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matola\">Matola<\/a>, and has a total population of 2,717,437. Maputo is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_city\">port city<\/a>, with an economy centered on commerce. It is also noted for its vibrant cultural scene and distinctive, eclectic architecture.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-:0-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-:1-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">Maputo is situated on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo_Bay\">a large natural bay<\/a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Ocean\">Indian Ocean<\/a>, near where the rivers Tembe, Mbuluzi, Matola and Infulene converge. The city consists of seven administrative divisions, which are each subdivided into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quarter_(urban_subdivision)\">quarters<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>bairros<\/em>. The city is surrounded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo_Province\">Maputo Province<\/a>, but is administered as a self-contained, separate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Provinces_of_Mozambique\">province<\/a>&nbsp;since 1998. Maputo City is the geographically smallest and most densely populated province in Mozambique.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-:0-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Maputo is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cosmopolitan\">cosmopolitan<\/a>&nbsp;city, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bantu_languages\">Bantu<\/a>, Tsonga languages being more common,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portuguese_language\">Portuguese<\/a>, and, to a lesser extent,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arabic\">Arabic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gujarati_language\">Indian<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_language\">Chinese<\/a>&nbsp;languages and cultures present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">The area on which Maputo stands was first settled as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishing_village\">fishing village<\/a>&nbsp;by ancient Tsonga people.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-:1-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was soon named Louren\u00e7o Marques, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louren%C3%A7o_Marques_(explorer)\">the navigator of the same name<\/a>&nbsp;who explored the area in 1544. The modern city traces its origins to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\">Portuguese<\/a>&nbsp;fort established on the site in 1781. A town grew around the fort starting around 1850, and in 1877 it was elevated to city status. In 1898, the colony of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portuguese_Mozambique\">Portuguese Mozambique<\/a>&nbsp;relocated its capital there. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Louren\u00e7o Marques grew both in population and economic development as a port city. Upon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mozambican_War_of_Independence\">Mozambican independence<\/a>&nbsp;in 1975, the city became the national capital and was renamed Maputo. During the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mozambican_Civil_War\">Mozambican Civil War<\/a>, the city&#8217;s economy was devastated. When the war ended, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FRELIMO\">FRELIMO<\/a>&nbsp;government launched a program to revive the city&#8217;s economy, and to clean up the city by forcibly removing criminals, squatters, and undocumented residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maputo has a number of landmarks, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pra%C3%A7a_da_Independ%C3%AAncia\">Independence Square<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo_City_Hall\">City Hall<\/a>, Maputo Fortress, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo_central_market\">central market<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tunduru_Gardens\">Tunduru Gardens<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo_Railway_Station\">Maputo Railway Station<\/a>. Maputo is known as an aesthetically attractive, if dilapidated, city. With wide avenues lined by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacaranda_mimosifolia\">jacaranda<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acacia\">acacia<\/a>&nbsp;trees, it has earned the nicknames&nbsp;<em>City of Acacias<\/em><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Pearl of the Indian Ocean<\/em>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The city is known for its distinct, eclectic architecture, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portuguese_colonial_architecture\">Portuguese colonial<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neoclassical_architecture\">Neoclassical<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manueline\">Manueline<\/a>&nbsp;styles alongside&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modern_architecture\">modern<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Deco\">Art Deco<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bauhaus\">Bauhaus<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brutalist_architecture\">Brutalist<\/a>&nbsp;buildings.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-:0-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The historic&nbsp;<em>Baixa de Maputo<\/em>&nbsp;district is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Downtown\">downtown<\/a>&nbsp;area. Maputo has a vibrant cultural scene, with many restaurants, music and performance venues, and local film industry.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maputo#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Maputo&#8217;s economy is centered around its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_of_Maputo\">port<\/a>, through which much of Mozambique&#8217;s imports and exports are shipped. The chief exports include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cotton\">cotton<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sugar\">sugar<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chromite\">chromite<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisal\">sisal<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copra\">copra<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hardwood\">hardwood<\/a>. In addition to trade, the city has robust&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manufacturing\">manufacturing<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tertiary_sector_of_the_economy\">service<\/a>&nbsp;sectors.
