Ever-Changing Landscape of Communication: The Decline of SMS and the advent of messaging app

In the ever-evolving world of technology, few advancements have had as profound an impact as the revolution in mobile communication. Gone are the days of paid SMS and the hassle of frequently recharging our phones. Today, we find ourselves immersed in a new era, where unlimited messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Botim allow us to stay connected effortlessly. Over the years and with changing times , there has been a remarkable transformation from the days of old mobile communication to the seamless messaging and calls we enjoy in the present digital landscape.

I still remember, sending an SMS meant paying a fee for each message and keeping a close eye on phone credit to ensure uninterrupted communication. However, the emergence of messaging apps transformed the landscape entirely. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facetime and Botim came to the forefront as our go-to platforms for messaging, offering unlimited messaging capabilities. These apps not only allowed us to send text messages but also effortlessly share photos, videos, voice messages, and documents, making communication richer and more dynamic than ever before.

Long gone are the days when making a phone call meant waiting in never-ending queues at public call office (PCO) booths. Technology intervened, giving birth to Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls, which revolutionized long-distance communication. Services like Yahoo Messenger, FaceTime, and eventually WhatsApp empowered us to connect with loved ones across great distances with just a tap on our smartphones. Suddenly, the world felt smaller, and geographical boundaries no longer posed limitations on our conversations.

As messaging apps and VOIP calls soared in popularity, traditional SMS on smartphones gradually lost its significance. Today, SMS is primarily used for receiving pin codes, credit card offers, or spam notifications :). Our preferred method of staying in touch has shifted to messaging apps like WhatsApp, carrying the communication torch. Offering end-to-end encryption, group chats, and an array of multimedia features, WhatsApp has become the ultimate choice for formal and informal conversations, cementing its dominance over traditional SMS.

As technology advances at an astonishing pace, the future of mobile communication holds endless possibilities. While we cannot predict with certainty, one cannot help but wonder what lies ahead. A glimpse into the innovations of Apple’s recently announced “Apple Vision Pro” hints at an exciting future. Augmented reality and advanced communication features may be on the horizon, transforming how we interact with one another and blurring the lines between the virtual and physical worlds. It is a future brimming with anticipation, where communication takes on new dimensions.
